RCF & BPCL Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at RCF Trombay unit, Chembur, Mumbai
Year of Implementation
2019
About the initiative
BPCL had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Rashtriya Chemicals Fertilizers (RCF) for setting up Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Trombay to treat 22.75 MLD (Millions of Litres per day) of municipal sewage to produce about 15 MLD of treated water, out of which 6 MLD of treated water is received to BPCL.
Key features
Before commissioning of STP Project Mumbai Refinery was fully dependent on Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) for water supply which use to impact the efficiency of refinery during scarcity of water supply. After commissioning of this project, Mumbai Refinery has become less dependent on scarce water source from MCGM.
The fresh water freed up of MCGM is available to supply as potable water to households and other users.
Regular checking of STP water quality at RCF lab is being undertaken. At BPCL lab, critical parameters like PH, Conductivity and hardness are checked for cross verification.
Reduction the water pollution since earlier this untreated sewage water was getting discharged into the environment / sea, affecting the bio-diversity and aquatic life.
Reduction in Land Pollution since the plastic wastage is captured in primary STP treatment process is segregated and disposed of appropriately.
Outcomes
The initiative has a positive impact on the regional water use on water stress since 6 MLD of fresh water from MCGM is conserved and equivalent sewage load at MCGM is getting eliminated.
In the year 2020-21 it was observed that the fresh water consumption of Mumbai Refinery from MCGM is reduced by 29.1% as compared to FY 2019-20.
For the latest financial year March 2021, we can observe that water dependency has reduced to 8545 MTPD.
In addition, after using RCF STP water in DM plant, water requirement for regeneration has also got reduced and total water saving per month has been calculated to be around 1800 MTPD.
Sustainability Measure
SDG 6 Clean Water and Sanitation: As the goal describe about ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. Through our project we are able to ensure that
RCF is currently purchasing approx. 1.5 times of treated water production equivalent sewage from MCGM which is equal to 22.75 MLD and treating it to generate 15 MLD of Fresh treated water which is helping is reduction of water stress on MCGM.
The fresh water of MCGM is spared for domestic purposes and adequate supply in all seasons.
SDG 8 Decent work and Economic Growth: Through this project the job opportunities has been created for the local community around Mumbai Refinery and RCF.
SDG 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure: This is one of the innovative state of art project, which has helped in reduction of water pollution, increased resource-use efficiency, improved bio- diversity by adoption of clean and environmentally sound technologies.
SDG 17 Partnerships for the Goals: BPCL has collaborated with another major corporate RCF to create this sustainable project which met their in-house requirement of water and also helped in reduction of water
